Today I had the opportunity to introduce young Keo, age 2.5, to scissors! Keo was reluctant at first, but, after his first snip, he was hooked. He worked methodically, cutting and gluing to create his completed collage.
Watching him alternate hands and carefully articulate the shapes was fascinating. Consider seeing a tool for the first time, experimenting with ways to use it, yielding different results and exploring variations. I was reminded of this blog post from the Children’s Creativity Museum. Working with this age group, I have learned the importance of ambiguity, allowing children to experiment and to come to their own conclusions.
